The leopard instantly saw them and hid inside a storm water drain below the road.
The victims, armed with sticks, made an attempt to catch the big cat when it happened to pounce on them. Fortunately, both of them managed to escape with only minor injuries and were discharged from the nearby hospital after initial medication and being cleared by the doctors.
As per the forest officials, to stop the leopard menace they had put up the cages in that area.
Incidentally, this is the second incident of a leopard attack taking place in the last three days. In both incidents, the leopard had attacked the victims near a sugarcane farm.
On Sunday, a forest guard had sustained injuries when a leopard attacked him at the Kundewadi village in the Sinnar taluka of the district. He had received injuries on his left hand as well as on the back of the head and neck.
The forest officials said this is the sixth incident of a leopard attack taking place in the last three months.
Sinnar taluka has many sugarcane farms and due to drought, most farmers have cut their canes. As there is no place to hide, the leopards are now wondering on the roads, said the forest department officials.
