Nashik: The city on Friday received nearly 50mm of rain, so far the season’s highest single-day showers, following over six hours of downpour from 8:30am to 5.30pm.
The swelling water of the Godavari partially inundated the Ramkund area. District and Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials said they were keeping a watch on the situation since the river was in spate.
Almost all talukas, especially Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri, received heavy rain on Friday
The India Meteorological department (
IMD) has issued a warning about more rain in Nashik for the next 48 hours and issued an orange alert in the district for Saturday.
Devang Jani, environmentalist and a resident of a low-lying area near Godavari river said, the water of the river Godavari has increased up to the waist of the Dutondya Maruti statue — a yardstick to measure the water level of the river.
He said, “The smart city company has done its work, but the results are not seen. The drainage lines have been connected to the stormwater lines. The rainwater is flowing into the Godavari with the sewage.”
NMC administrator Ramesh Pawar told TOI that the administration was working on a plan to stop release of drainage into the river. “Efforts are on to ensure that the natural water will flow from Godavari till Ramkund. The entry points from where the sewage mixes into the river will be diverted through sewage lines,” he said.
Resident Dnyaneshwar Kale said the drainage water along with rainwater had entered some houses in the Pandit Jawaharlal Nagar near Dwarka Circle.
Fire brigade officials said they received a couple of calls related to uprooting of trees. An NMC official said potholes created by the intermittent light to medium rain for the past two days would be repaired immediately.
Frequent power interruptions were reported from areas such as Gangapur Road, Nashik Road and Nandur Naka. “Power snapped every half an hour and the interruptions lasted for 10-15 minutes from 11am to 3 pm,” said
Sanjay Shah, a shopowner in the Gangapur Road area.
