Nashik ZP team to visit Alwar to assess water conservation execution process
Nashik: The Zilla Parishad has decided to send a team to the Alwar district in Rajasthan to understand the site selection and process to implement effective water conservation in Nashik, based on the advice of Magsaysay award winner Rajendra Singh.Singh, known as India’s Waterman, hails from Alwar, where he has successfully undertaken several water conservation schemes. He was in Nashik recently to lay the foundation of the Bhagirath Prayas Mission. The CEO of Nashik ZP, Ashima Mittal, said the district administration has undertaken the work of groundwater recharge at the cost of Rs103 crore in the villages through the Bhagirath Prayas Mission to ensure citizens are not dependent on tankers for drinking water purposes in the next summer season.Singh said the engineers should look for vertical fractures in the ground and focus on groundwater recharge around them for efficient recharging of aquifers. He also said horizontal fractures would not lead to good results.“The work on many structures has started, and we have to finish the work before the onset of monsoon. We will send a team to Alwar to study the technique and look for similar solutions to ensure the best results,” Mittal said. The ZP plans to get 1,220 hectares under indirect cultivation by making 5,757 cubic water available through the construction and repairs of weirs through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).Water conservation will ensure the recharging of groundwater levels, therefore making water available for drinking as well as rabi crops.“The exercise will lower the chances of migration of people from the rural, especially the tribal areas of the district, to the city. Many often go to Surat or Nashik city in search of employment post-Diwali season,” a senior officer said.
