Nashik top cop calls review meet on illegal parking issue
Nashik: Police commissioner Ankush Shinde has been receiving calls from residents requesting him to crackdown on the rampant illegal parking on city roads, which leads to traffic chaos.Taking into account the same, he has called a meeting of police traffic branch officials on Monday to take a review of the illegal parking situation and measures to control it.Speaking to TOI, Nashik city police commissioner Shinde admitted that illegal parking in the city was a major issue.“I have received complaints regarding the rampant illegal parking. The police too are putting in their sincere efforts to control the situation and a maximum number of motorists, who violate traffic rules, are issued e-challans. The contract of the towing service for illegal parking was cancelled recently because of the arguments that took place between the towing workers and the motorists over picking up the vehicles,” Shinde. Most of the time, vehicles were picked up from spots where there were no signboards of ‘no parking’, which triggered the argument between the towing vehicle employees and motorists concerned, he said adding that the Nashik Municipal Corporation needs to put up no parking boards along the roads concerned.During Monday’s meeting with traffic officials, it will be discussed how the towing service can be started. The Nashik city police deployed two cranes and three tempos to pick up illegally parked vehicles in July 2021. A few weeks ago, the contract was cancelled. Many citizens criticised the illegal parking system in the city.An elderly citizen, on the condition of anonymity, said, “Illegal parking is destroying the beauty of the city. Due to this menace not only do the streets look bad, but they also hamper the vehicular traffic movement . There is hardly any street in the city where one gets to see a systematic vehicle parking system.”“Apart from illegal parking, the vendors on the roadside and motorists stopping near them to purchase articles make the roads even narrower. All junctions on the highway and the service roads along the Mumbai Agra highway can be seen with illegal vehicle parking,” said Vivek Gaidhani, a resident of Nashik Road.
