NASHIK: The standing committee of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Saturday approved the proposal to convert the unused water pumping station into a sewage pumping station at the Old Gangapur Road at a cost of Rs 3.35 crore.
The sewage in this area would be diverted to the Tapovan Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
The NMC had invited e-tenders from competent contractors for civil works and allied works for the sewage treatment plant in June.
On Saturday, the standing committee approved the proposal to hand over the contract to M/s Anand Constrowell and to begin the work at the earliest. However, the corporators and the chairman of the standing committee, Ramesh Dhongade, demanded to know the advantages of the sewage pumping station.
"How will the sewage pumping station help in addressing the sewage problem in the area?" BJP corporator Seema Hiray of prabhag 15 (a) asked. She demanded whether the sewage at Gangapur will be tackled with this project.
Executive engineer (environment) S R Vanjari said, "Through this sewage pumping station, the sewage in Gangapur area will be carried to the sewage treatment plant at Tapovan and the river pollution will also be under control. At present, the intercepting sewers here are overloaded. The sewage of Gangapur, where an STP has been proposed, will also be diverted here."
The machinery at the water pumping station, which has been closed for a decade, will be used for the STP to alleviate the cost and address the sewage problem in the city. The sewage will be sent to the Tapovan STP via trunk sewers at Makhmalabad.
