Road on Monday night. The cars were parked near residential buildings. The police said that the incident took place in Sangam Society, Avinda Society, Dnyan Sarita Society and at the RTO corner.
Earlier in the day, rumors had spread that several cars in the area were being torched.
However, the police rushed to the area and found that the case was one of burglary. ACP Ganesh Shinde of Zone I also said that the aim of the miscreants was burglary.
The Panchavati police said, Saurab Aher of Sangam Society, owner a damaged vehicle, lodged a complaint with them. The other vehicle owners, however, did not lodge any complaint till Tuesday evening.
Senior inspector Bajirao Bhosale said that the thieves cut the glasses of the vehicles to steal the music systems.
The police officials said they are yet to ascertain the exact number of cars damaged in the burglaries as many vehicle owners are yet to report the damage done to their cars.
The police said the number of thefts from parked cars is increasing in the past few years.
Four cars were targeted on March 4. Two music systems, a laptop and a pen-drive, totally worth Rs 85,500 were stolen from the cars parked at Rohini Ravi housing society, Canada Corner. Vishnu Bagul, living in the society, said that the burglars smashed the window glasses of the four cars.
In a similar complaint lodged at the Bhadrakali police station, Abhijit Deshmukh of Gangapur Road said that a music system worth Rs 6,000 was stolen from his car on the same night. Another theft took place in the Kamatwade area of Cidco in which a car stereo worth Rs 5,000 was stolen by breaking the glass of a parked car between 1.30 am and 6 am on March 5.
In another case registered with the Indiranagar police on April 16, a music system worth Rs 15,000 was stolen on April 15. The complainant said he parked the car in front of his house at 8 pm on Sunday and the next morning at 7 am he found the music system stolen..
