Monsoon onset in Nashik region likely after June 23
Nashik: Monsoon is likely to arrive in Nashik after June 23, Anupam Kashyapi, head of the weather forecasting division, IMD Pune, said. The normal date of monsoon onset in Nashik is June 15 but it is likely to get delayed by about eight to ten days this year. Kashyapi told TOI, “Monsoon has reached Sindhudurg, Kolhapur and will gradually advance towards north madhya Maharashtra. It is expected to mark its presence in the region from June 23 to 29 before advancing further. Nashik could experience monsoon by June 25.”According to senior officials, the monsoon is likely to reach Mumbai by June 21 and then a push by south westerly winds is likely to carry it to Nashik and the north Maharashtra region. The officer also pointed out that the delay was specifically due to cyclone Biporjoy that originated in Arabian Sea at latitudes coinciding with Kerala, travelled nine days in the Arabian Sea, sucking up moisture from atmosphere, and made a landfall in Gujarat.Nashik district has so far received only 17 % of the 110 mm rainfall it should have received, indicating a deficiency of 83 percent. The agriculture department has already sounded alert, saying the sowing should not be carried out before the areas receive at least 25 percent of rain and conditions are favourable.“While some talukas have received some rain, the condition is not favourable at this point of time. Only cotton sowing has begun in some northern districts that are parched,” said Kailas Shirsath, agriculture development officer, Nashik zilla parishad. Kharif cultivation is carried out across 6.58 lakh hectares and now the sowing has been carried out on 1,727 hectares of land so far. The water levels across the district have fallen to 15 thousand million cubic feet or 23% of total storage of 65.67 TMC.
