Nashik: The Crime Branch Unit 1 of the Nashik city police arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly stealing cash and jewellery, worth over Rs 4.5 lakh, from his friend's house in the Panchavati area.
The accused, identified as Sumit Rajure, of Shrirampur in Ahilyanagar, was arrested on Sunday. The police said they recovered 31gm of gold jewellery worth Rs 4.5 lakh.
The police said Rajure had come to his friend Ganesh Shinde's house in Panchavati on Jan 21, and told him that he had quarrelled with his family and wanted to spend the night. The next day, Rajure left the house with Ganesh in the morning. The Police said that a few days later, Ganesh's parents, who were out of town, returned home and, on Jan 27, when they needed money, they found the cash was less than what they kept, and some jewellery was also missing.
When asked, Ganesh told police that Rajure stayed overnight at their house on Jan 21, and the next day he went to the bedroom on the upper floor to change clothes, when he may have stolen the valuables.
The police said Ganesh called Rajure on his mobile phone and accused him of theft, but Rajure told him that he did not steal anything. Ganesh's father then registered a complaint against Rajure. The police said the Crime Branch kept watch on Rajure's movements and, on Sunday, traced his location in Nashik city, arrested him and recovered the stolen gold jewellery.
The police said the case was investigated under the guidance of CP Sandeep Karnik, DCP (crime) Kirankumar Chavan, and ACP (crime) Sandeep Mitke.
