NASHIK
: The state government has instituted a committee of officials from Nashik-based Maharashtra
Engineering Research Institute
(
MERI
) to study durability, safety and economic viability of the use of ferro-cement construction technique that is in vogue in the construction industry.
Invented in 1940, the technique has found major use only during the last two decades. Since the technique requires less raw material and manpower and not much technology know how, the government has decided to explore its feasibility.
"The government has issued a resolution on Wednesday through which it has constituted a committee to study the ferro-cement construction activity. We will study and analyse it and submit a comprehensive study report to the government," said
Ravindra Upasni
, who is the head of the committee. He is also the chief engineer of Central Design Organisation (
CDO
) at MERI.
The ferro-cement technique largely involves cement mortar on wire mesh, which reduces self weight without compromising on strength of the construction. "A highly versatile form of reinforced concrete, ferro-cement can be fabricated in any desired shape very easily. It is said to be more earthquake resistant,"
Vivek Pathak, an engineer with a private company, said.
The state government is carrying out construction of various buildings and roads for public purposes. The
Public Works Department
(PWD) or the building and construction cell of the local self governing bodies are involved in this work.
The committee will prepare a handbook of the process if it is found to be feasible. This handbook will then be the guide for the construction activities using ferro-cement technique across the state, a senior official from CDO said.
