Hindi exam for govt staff cancelled: Marathi language minister Samant

Nashik: State govt has cancelled the Hindi language examination for govt officers and employees, scheduled on June 28, following strong opposition from political parties and language groups, said Marathi language minister Uday Samant on Wednesday.The decision came after protests from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Sena (UBT) and Marathi language activists, who questioned the need for such an exam in a Marathi-speaking state.Speaking to reporters after a review meeting of the Shiv Sena's Nashik unit, Samant said, "Govt will assess whether the examination is necessary and review the existing provisions."The state language department earlier announced the exam for gazetted officers under rules dating back to 1976. Critics argued that making Hindi proficiency part of service conditions was unwarranted and undermined the importance of Marathi. Some politicians had also warned of protests at examination centres, prompting govt to reconsider its decision.Meanwhile, Samant added, "Shiv Sena will contest the upcoming Nashik Zilla Parishad elections as part of Mahayuti. He expressed confidence that the party will retain control of the zilla parishad."He said, "Coordination committees have been formed and meetings are being held at division, taluka and group levels to strengthen the organisation and fill key posts." Samant reiterated the party will not go solo, but will pursue expansion while remaining aligned with its allies. Dismissing reports of internal differences, he asserted that there is no factionalism within the party or the Mahayuti and warned of action against those attempting to create divisions.
