Ajay Misar
has been appointed the special public prosecutor (
PP
) in the Punjab
Maharashtra Co-operative Bank scam case.
Misar’s appointment by the state government is based on a reference by Mumbai police commissioner Sanjay Barve.
The bank fraud, according to reports, has reached an alleged
Rs 4,355.46 crore. An FIR in the case was first registered with Bhandup police station, based on a complaint filed by the recovery officer of the bank, Jasbir Singh Matta.
The investigation was handed over to the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police. Among the accused are the bank’s managing director, members of the bank’s board and office bearers of the Housing Development Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL).
Misar said that deposits of at least 9.12 lakh depositors have been lost in the alleged scam. He said the bank’s closure of comes as a huge calamity for depositors as many have fallen ill and there have been reports of suicide as well. Taking
The investigating committee formed by the state government also includes computer and banking experts along with representatives from the Reserve Bank of India.
The trial will be held in the special court of the Metropolitan Magistrate in Mumbai.
Ajay Misar has handled many cases as public prosecutor, including the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, the Pakmodia street firing case, cases involving people linked to terror networks and the murder of Manoj Pande in Mumbai.
