Nashik: The city police have finalised a consultant to undertake the close circuit television (CCTV) project across the city.
Last year, a proposal was sent by police commissionerate expressing requirement of CCTVs in Nashik, following which, the state government gave a nod to the IT department to check the scope of work for installing the cameras.
The police headquarters had sent a revised proposal requesting the government to provide Nashik with the necessary surveillance system. In its proposal, it has also sought 700 additional cameras of to cover other important areas of the city against the 378 cameras that were installed during Kumbh.
Commissioner of police S Jaganathan said, "As part of the administrative procedure, one of the five consultants recognised by the IT department had to be appointed for the survey."
He said that a survey across the city has already been conducted by the police. However, the consultant would carry out another survey to find out the feasibility and the locations where the cameras need to be installed.
"The type of cameras and the angles through which they have to be installed, along with other technical details would be chalked out after which a detailed report would be prepared," he said, adding that based on the report submitted to the state government, the necessary funds would be sanctioned.
Jaganathan said that after the funds would be sanctioned at the state level, tenders would be floated and the work would start. He added that covering the city under the CCTV net is one of the top priorities of the state government, the process for which would be expedited.
After Mumbai and Pune, the state government is looking to provide CCTV cover in Nashik. Residents and police officials have been demanding digital eye cover since long.
