NASHIK: Noted film director Kamal Swaroop will inaugurate the fifth edition of Ankur film festival at Raosaheb Thorat hall of MVP institutions here at 5.30 pm on Thursday.

This year, the events will also include two workshops for budding filmmakers in and around Nashik.

The

Maratha Vidya Prasarak

group of institutions has joined hands with

Abhivyakti Media

an NGO to organize the festival.

Jitesh Pagare, a member of Abhivyakti group, said: “The festival will open with ‘Tracing Phalke’, the first film of Swaroop on Dadasaheb Phalke. The city being the birthplace of Phalke, the Father of Indian Cinema, we are screening movies on him to begin the festival.”

The screening will follow a discussion on the movie and Swaroop’s research on the life and work of Phalke.

In all, 85 full-length movies, short films, documentaries and nano-films will be screened at the festival.

Pagare said, “For the first time, we are organizing workshops for local film makers to provide a much-needed technical boost to the film industry in North Maharashtra.”

Film scholar Anil Zankar will be conducting the first workshop on December 23 on ‘Approaches to short film making’, while writer-director Mitali Joshi will share her expertise on ‘screen writing’ in the second workshop on December 24.

These workshops are open for all. However, to participate in the discussion, one must have some experience in film-making.

The festival will conclude with the screening of the movie, ‘Invoking Justice’. Director of the movie Deepa Dhanraj will participate in a post-movie discussion session.

Dhanraj will also be the chief guest at the concluding function of the festival.
