NASHIK: Three men drowned in the Igatpuri municipality lake on Saturday morning.

Police inspector Vasant Pathve of the Igatpuri police station said they have registered a case of accidental death.

The deceased have been identified as Shahnavaz Qadir Shaikh (41), a resident of Igatpuri, and his two relatives — Ramiz Abdul Qadir Shaikh (36) and Nadim Abdul Qadir Shaikh (34) — from Kalyan in Thane district, said Pathve.

The Igatpuri police said that the incident took place at 10.30 am. Though they were brought out of the water within hal -an hour and rushed to the Igatpuri rural hospital, they could not survive.

The Kalyan-based relatives of Shahnavaz Qadir Shaikh had come to Igatpuri from Thane around 8.30am on Saturday to meet him. A couple of hours later, they went to the Igatpuri municipality lake, which was close to their house.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased men and other residents of Igatpuri staged a sit-in protest over the lack of facilities at the hospital.

Pathve said by the time the incident was brought to the notice of the police and lifeguards were arranged to enter the water, approximately 20 minutes had passed. It took another half an hour to search for the victims. Once found, they were rushed to the hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Harish Chaube, the fire safety officer of Mahindra and Mahindra, who was a part of the rescue team, said the deceased were fished out, but they could not survive.
