Yavatmal-Murtizapur Broad-Gauge Project Edges Closer To Reality

Nagpur: The long-awaited Yavatmal–Murtizapur railway gauge conversion project—a vital link connecting the Wardha–Nanded line and a key driver for the development of Western Vidarbha—is now moving closer to realization, thanks to sustained technical follow-ups and persistent advocacy.An RTI query filed by Akshay Pandey, coordinator of the Shakuntala Railway Development Committee, revealed that Central Railway has completed field and traffic surveys, finalized alignments, and prepared station yard plans in coordination with the operating department.The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently in draft form, with cost estimates underway. It is expected to be submitted to the Railway Board by November 2025.The committee claimed that its continuous efforts over the past few years were also highlighted in the Rajya Sabha by MP Anil Bonde. As a result of these follow-ups, the state government announced 50% financial participation in the project in February 2024."Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had previously discussed the project with former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, demonstrating consistent state-level support," the committee said."This decades-long project is finally taking shape. The Yavatmal–Murtizapur line will be a lifeline for the region and a key factor in transforming the socio-economic landscape of Western Vidarbha," it added.The committee also stated that all-party MPs have consistently supported the project. Newly elected MP Sanjay Deshmukh recently met Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to push the initiative forward."For over 60 years, the Shakuntala broad-gauge project has been pursued at multiple levels of government. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has also sent letters to railway ministers on two occasions regarding its progress. The project should now be closely monitored through the Chief Minister's War Room to ensure timely final approval," the committee urged.The successful completion of this project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and spur development in Yavatmal district, a region long affected by agrarian distress.
