VTA urges Modi to halt cash subsidies amid rising fuel costs

Nagpur: Citing rising inflationary pressure triggered by global geopolitical tensions and escalating fuel prices, Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider temporarily suspending certain cash subsidy disbursements across India.In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister on May 20, VTA expressed concern over the economic impact of the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran, stating that India is now beginning to feel the effects of the international crisis. The association pointed out that fuel prices have reportedly increased by nearly 4%, with diesel price hikes likely to trigger inflation across transportation, logistics and essential services.VTA president Shravan Kumar Malu and honorary secretary Tejinder Singh Renu said the increasing cost burden is affecting both common citizens and industries. The association argued that diesel, being central to transportation and supply chains, directly impacts the pricing of almost every commodity in the market.The taxpayers' body further claimed extensive cash subsidy distribution has unintentionally affected labour availability in several sectors, creating operational difficulties for industries and businesses. Per the association, temporarily withholding some subsidy payments for a couple of months could help the Centre reduce pressure arising from rising fuel costs.Describing the proposal as a "balanced and temporary" measure, VTA clarified that it supports the govt's welfare policies and inclusive growth initiatives.
