Vidarbha Heatwave Enters Third Day; Akola, Amravati, Wardha Among World’s Hottest
Nagpur: Vidarbha continued to reel under a severe heatwave for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, with temperatures soaring across the region and several districts hovering near historic highs for April. Akola and Amravati remained among the worst-hit locations, recording a maximum temperature of around 45.2°C, while Wardha followed closely at 45°C. These three districts were hottest in Maharashtra and the world alongside other Indian cities in the top 15.According to meteorological observations, Nagpur recorded extreme temperature of 44.4°C, while Chandrapur touched 44.8°C. Other districts, including Yavatmal (44°C), Gadchiroli (44°C), Washim (43.6°C) and Brahmapuri (43.4°C), continued to experience intense heat, indicating a widespread and persistent heatwave across Vidarbha.Notably, the current temperatures are edging closer to long-term April records in several cities. Amravati recently recorded 46.8°C on April 26, approaching its all-time April high of 46.8°C, while Yavatmal and Wardha too have come close to their historical peaks for the month. Nagpur's current temperatures remain just below its April record of 47.1°C.The situation is being aggravated by high minimum temperatures, with nights offering little respite. Several cities, including Chandrapur and Yavatmal, recorded minimum temperatures around 30°C, significantly above normal levels. This has intensified discomfort and increased the risk of heat-related illnesses.Adding to the distress is the complete absence of rainfall across the region in the last 24 hours, coupled with low humidity levels during the afternoon, which further enhance heat stress. The ongoing heatwave has disrupted daily life, with roads wearing a deserted look during peak afternoon hours. Health experts have advised residents to avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and outdoor workers. The IMD has forecast continued high temperatures over the next few days. It has warned of thunderstorms and lightning on Wednesday and Thursday across Vidarbha. A similar warning was issued for Tuesday, but no precipitation was recorded.
