Vacant CAP Std XI seats are a cause for concern
Nagpur: As the state education department prepares for the upcoming Common Admission Process (CAP) for junior colleges, the perennial high number of vacant seats in Nagpur city remains a concern. CAP is mandatory for all state board-affiliated junior colleges in urban areas, including Nagpur city. For clarity on jurisdiction, the education department has declared that all junior colleges within Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) limits have to participate in the CAP. Last year, around 20,000 seats remained vacant in the city even after multiple rounds of CAP were held. With an intake capacity of 55,800, this meant that only 63% of the available seats got filled. A senior academic said, “This has been the story year after year. Earlier, at least 70% of the seats would get filled but now it’s going down. This year, we feel it may slide further.” The speculation of more Std XI seats under CAP going vacant is based on the wide gap between result dates of two important boards here. CBSE X results were declared on May 12 and its mark sheets are already available on the central government’s DigiLocker portal. The senior principal added, “With mark sheets available, CBSE students can apply for admission immediately. But our SSC students will have to wait till June, because that’s when their results will be declared. Students of CBSE would prefer to simply secure admission in their own board-affiliated schools in Std XI and start the academic session early.”With the new trend of CBSE schools also aggressively aping the coaching class tie-up model, there is all the more reason for central board students to continue in the same ecosystem. The principal said, “You have multiple CBSE schools both in city and even on the outskirts, which have adopted the model. Schools outside NMC limits don’t come under the CAP and these can proceed directly with admissions en masse.”
