Marital rape is social, not legal issue: Union law minister Arjun Meghwal

Nagpur: Union law and justice minister Arjun Meghwal on Friday staunchly defended the BJP-led NDA govt's stance on marital rape, asserting that it is fundamentally a ‘social issue' rather than a legal one. His remarks came in the wake of the govt opposition to the criminalization of marital rape in the Supreme Court on Thursday, where it contended that a ‘comprehensive approach' is imperative due to the intricate socio-legal ramifications.
Meghwal, addressing the media during the inauguration of a three-day orientation and training programme for newly appointed members of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), emphasized the govt conviction that the issue necessitates meticulous deliberation beyond a mere legal framework.
The minister lauded ITAT for its pivotal role in dispensing justice and bolstering entrepreneurs. Drawing from a personal anecdote during his tenure as a civil servant, he highlighted the tribunal's impact on resolving convoluted tax disputes.
Meghwal underscored the significance of perpetual learning and exhorted participants to conduct SWOT analysis in both their personal and professional spheres. He implored them to turn challenges into opportunities and concentrate on reformative actions rather than punitive measures.
Meghwal addressed the 77th batch of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer trainees, urging them to be socially conscious and ensure that their actions contribute positively to both, nation and humanity.
