Two months after wife’s death, man still unsure about cause

Nagpur: Two months after Kamptee resident Kailash Mule’s wife died mysteriously after delivering a baby at Rathi Hospital in Kamptee, despite having no complications during her pregnancy, the family still does not know the cause of her death.

An expert committee under district civil surgeon Dr Devendra Paturkar is required to conduct an inquiry into the matter and decide whether the case involves medical negligence. The cops claim to have sent all reports and letters to Dr Paturkar’s office over a month ago, and even sent a reminder. However, Dr Paturkar told TOI he was unaware of the case. He later cited lack of ‘technical staff’ for the undue delay in conducting an inquiry. This case is one example of how a common man is rendered helpless at the hands of law.

Mule, who alleged medical negligence by Dr Rathi, has run pillar to post to seek justice. He has appealed to the police station, collector, guardian minister, divisional commissioner, police commissioner and GMCH dean to help him. While Chandrashekhar Bawankule forwarded his case to zonal DCP Poddar, multiple trips to GMCH have not yielded any result. On the contrary, a video has emerged of GMCH PMJAY coordinator Dr Murari Singh telling Kailash and his relatives “doctor ka wicket gira dene ka (kill the doctor)”.

“When Priyanka complained of uneasiness after the delivery, we took it lightly. Dr Sanjay came to the hospital at night and administered her two injections, after which her health worsened. I suspected a mistake on the part of the doctor after Priyanka was shifted to Lifeline Hospital immediately, without our consent,” said Mule (30), a wheat trader who married Priyanka only a year ago.

“At 1.30am, after operating on Priyanka, Dr Tameem Fazil at Lifeline Hospital told me that the patient is five per cent alive, and I could take her to any other hospital if I desired. Before leaving for home, he said, ‘Jo banta tumse karlo, humari upar tak pehchan hai (do what you can, we have contacts till the top level)’. Doctors from other Kamptee hospitals also gathered there and told us that Priyanka had suffered blood clotting. What was the need for all doctors to assemble if there was no mistake by the doctor’s side?” said Mule.

Primary post mortem was done by doctors of forensic medicine at GMCH, who submitted the report on September 25. The report says that opinion was reserved on the probable cause of death and sought examination by the chemical analyser. A report dated October 15, signed by assistant chemical analyser NN Mate claims that no poison was found in the viscera.
