NAGPUR: Some conmen tricked employees of a liquor bar chain and fled with briefcase with Rs 5.97 lakh cash.
The fraudsters had foxed the victims with some currency notes strewn on Residency Road in Sadar road. Police said that manager of liquor bar chain Shahul Abdul Hameed Shah, 68, was heading to deposit the collection in the bank when the incident took place.
The briefcase was kept on the seat of the car. Shah was travelling with his caretaker Durgesh Kawre. They stopped near an electronic shop. Shah sent his driver inside the shop to pay Rs 3,000 for the bulbs they had bought and collect the bill.
Police said Shah took out cash from the bag and handed over the bag to his caretaker who kept it on the backseat. The driver then walked into the shop. Meanwhile, an unidentified person turned up near the car and pointed out towards Rs 10 currency notes strewn on the road close to the vehicle.
The caretaker jumped off the car to collect the notes from the ground leaving the bag with cash unattended. He was taken aback to see the bag missing when he returned with a few Rs 10 currencies from the road. Sadar police have registered the case as theft and are investigating.
