But the Dr K G Memorial Hospital organized a hands on training workshop on Saturday to mark their 31st anniversary in collaboration with Nagpur Association of Ophthalmology (NAO), the first training of its kind by any hospital and an association by bringing all the infrastructure together.

“The technique is not very easy. It requires a perfect coordination of brain, eyes, legs, feet and hands to put the machine in working in the required manner. We brought all infrastructure together and involved just 35 doctors to train them perfectly in conducting the procedure. It involves removal of faulty retina and replacing it with a foldable lens. Since such experiments cannot be done directly on man the technique was first taught on goats’ eyes collected from a butcher house,” said Dr Sulabha Deshpande, senior ophthalmologist from the hospital.

NAO president Dr

Anant Gade

said that the participants were made to put the human nucleus from the cataracts removed from the actual operations to teach them conduct the operation successfully.

Phaco surgeons Dr N D Patil, Dr Mukund Oke, Dr Rajesh Joshi, Dr Archana Nikose, Dr Rajesh Sinha, Dr

Shashank Bidaye

and DR Neha Deshpande spoke on various aspects of the surgery. Dr Santosh, Arun Goswami taught the participants about use of this technique as perfectly as possible. NAO secretary Dr Mohna Mujumdar was also present on the occasion.
