Nagpur: Two weeks after TOI highlighted the hazardous condition of the road leading to Kalamna Shani Temple, the Public Works Department (PWD) has finally begun repair work on the potholed stretch.
The road, which had turned nearly impassable due to large potholes and waterlogging during rains, had become a major safety hazard—particularly for two-wheelers. Locals said it was the first major action by authorities after repeated complaints over the past few months.
PWD workers have now begun filling potholes with gravel and laying a layer of tar to stabilise the surface. Earlier, TOI had reported how torrential rains had turned the stretch into a series of waterlogged craters due to poor drainage and lack of timely maintenance.
The absence of streetlights further worsened the situation, especially at night. The route, frequented by temple visitors and shoppers, had become dangerous, with vehicles often skidding on the wet and broken road. Shopkeeper Mohammad Salim said delivery vehicles had stopped coming to his store due to the crater-filled road, severely affecting business during peak hours.
Residents recalled that the road was once easily motorable but had deteriorated into a maze of invisible, submerged potholes. Several motorists suffered minor accidents after skidding or falling into hidden craters.
While locals have welcomed the repair work, many urged the authorities to replace the temporary patchwork with permanent resurfacing and proper drainage to avoid a repeat of the ordeal during future rains.
