Nagpur: Family members of 23-year-old Kailash Nimbane were shattered by the news of his death in a road accident on Monday night, but doctors at a hospital caused more grief to the family by presenting a huge bill and refusing to hand over the body till the bill was paid. Nimbane lost his life after a speeding four-wheeler knocked down his two-wheeler near University Campus Square at Amravati Road.
Nimbane leaves behind a widow mother and elder brother Vikesh.
Nimbane used to work for daily wages. He was heading home with two friends, Ranjeet Naik and Rakesh Sevatkar, on a bike when a speeding car knocked them down and fled away. The trio suffered serious injuries and were lying on the road till Ambazari police reached the spot and rushed them to a private hospital at Ravi Nagar Square. Nimbane was declared brought dead by doctors while Naik and Sevatkar are undergoing treatment.
Vikesh said that the doctors declared Nimbane dead at 10pm on Monday. “Then, they handed over a bill of Rs17,000 and asked us to pay before allowing the body to be shifted for post mortem. We were already in shock and had no money to pay the bill. After convincing a lot, the doctors reduced the bill to Rs15,000,” said Vikesh, who works with a catering service.
The Nimbane family then took help from the police and the amount was brought down to Rs9,000. Vikesh said they somehow collected Rs9,000 from neighbours and relatives to pay the bill. Finally, the body was handed over to the family at 6pm on Tuesday and shifted for autopsy. Ambazari police have registered a case against the unidentified driver.
In another incident at 11.45pm at Narendra Nagar Ring Road on Monday, Sanjay Maske, 40, a resident of Dhadiwal Layout, was heading home on his two-wheeler when a speeding truck knocked him down, causing his death. Ajni police have registered a case against driver Akshay Shevale.
