NAGPUR: 'I am fine' said the 16-year-old, moments before he fell silent forever.
Ankit Sharma, younger of two brothers, was crushed under the wheels of a truck at MIDC T-point on Amravati Road on Monday evening.
The traffic police personnel posted where the accident took place apparently did not come forward to help the injured boy, sources said. The standard IX student died later in the evening at a private hospital.
A flicker of hope crossed the hearts of Ankit's kin when they saw the boy talking without showing any symptoms of deterioration. However, specialists at Dande hospital already knew that it was merely a few minutes before the boy would die of his internal injuries. Surprisingly, there was no wound on the body, apart from a bruise near the left knee.
"The hospital management first summoned a cardiac specialist and then one who checked his abdomen. The cardiac specialist kept us on the tenterhooks, but the other one realized that Ankit's kidneys were crushed when the truck's wheel passed over his lower abdomen. We were finally told to wait for the tragic moment," said a close relative, who rushed Ankit to hospital in an autorickshaw.
"We could not tell Ankit's father what had happened. He is still dazed, but has probably guessed by now that Ankit is no longer with us," said another relative. Ankit's father Subodh is a property dealer and works at a grocery shop.
Ankit had been returning home at Mangaldham society in Wadi from his tuition when the accident took place. There is some confusion over the manner in which the accident took place.
Wadi police have recorded in the complaint that Ankit was hit by the truck while crossing the road on foot. He came under the front wheels of the left side of the truck heading towards Nagpur.
However, Ankit's family says it was impossible for him to be on foot, since he left home for tuition on the cycle. His cycle is now untraceable. Wadi police sources said that more details and facts would surface in their investigations. Some eyewitnesses also claim that Ankit was riding pillion on a friend's Scooty.
Ankit apparently enjoyed some snacks at an outlet at the corner of the junction and then was heading towards the other side of the road. "Ankit was scared on seeing an overloaded autorickshaw approaching him. He jumped to a side to avoid the auto, but came under the speeding truck," claimed a close family member.
A friend of Ankit's father spotted the boy on the road and informed the family. The truck which crushed the boy was unable to flee the spot and was later taken to Wadi police station. The cops have already arrested driver Sadiq Basa.
