Stabbed girl still critical, battles multiple organ dysfunction

NAGPUR: The condition of Sanika Thugaonkar suffering from a stab injury continues to be

critical

. She is battling for life with multi-organ dysfunction.


Avinash Patne, the girl’s uncle with whom she was living with, admitted that she was struggling for survival. The family had already spent about Rs 2.5 lakh of the borrowed money. “Her parents’ financial condition is not good. Her father has a very small studio. We have borrowed money from all sources,” he said.

Sanika, 18, a student of textile designing, was

stabbed

repeatedly by her jilted male friend, Rohit Hemnani, at her uncle’s office at Saraswati Vinayak Apartment at Bajaj Nagar on Sunday.

physician treating her at Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI), told TOI that she may have to be put on dialysis as her second kidney is not functioning normally after removal of an injured kidney.

Her blood pressure continues to be low and efforts are on to improve it with medication. “She continues to be on ventilator support. Her liver and

pancreas

have also been affected due to the injury. It is difficult to predict anything now,” he said.

Dr Anup Marar, OCHRI’s medical director, said the patient’s haemodynamic condition was improving. Her haemoglobin level had touched 9 but she continues to be on blood transfusion.

He said Dr Sudhir Tomey, gastro-intestinal surgeon, and uro-Dr Amit Deshpande surgeon on Monday performed very complicated surgeries to protect the

inferior vena cava

, the main blood vessel collecting blood back to the heart. The diaphragm, pancreas, kidney and this blood vessel were badly damaged.

Dr Marar praised the effort of Dr Akash Saoji, who despite being an orthopaedic surgeon first attended to the patient, brought her to the intensive care unit and provided all the necessary care till the surgeons took over the patient.

Vascular surgeon Dr Rohit Gupta, who repaired the inferior vena cava, said the blood vessel is torn very badly and needed emergency repair to restore the blood flow to the heart.

Dr Smita Harkare, Dr Neeta Deshpande, Dr Anita Pande and Dr Sweety Pasari supported the surgery. Dr Ashish Shukla, the chest physician also treated the patient. Besides, Dr Santosh Gadge, Dr Roshan Jawlekar, Dr Vina Bang, Dr Akshay Burlawar, Dr Sachin Gondane and Dr Himanshu Dodeja are providing intensive care.
