Nagpur: MIDC police have booked Krishna Vihar Society president

Hemant Deshmukh

for

negligence

leading to the death of four labourers by inhalation of

toxic gas

in a

safety tank

on Tuesday afternoon. The relatives of the deceased staged a protest at collector office and at the Government Medical College and Hospital mortuary, demanding immediate action against the

culprits

and monetary help to the family, who lost the bread winners.
Police said Deshmukh had not complained about the blockage to NMC officials. To avoid paying more charges to NMC workers, Deshmukh asked the society’s security guard to call some local labourers. Police have booked Deshmukh for his negligence leading to the death of the labourers. However, no arrests have been made so far.
The incident claimed the life of father-son duo Sunil Valmik, 45, and 18-year-old Vicky, Valmik’s nephew Sumit Chauhan, 30, and Sajay Masade. Valmik leaves behind wife, two daughters and a son. Valmik and his son Vicky were the only earning members of the family.
Chauhan, who hails from Kashganj, Uttar Pradesh, had come to the city a few days ago. He had come to take his aunt, Valmik’s wife, for a family function at Kashganj. On Tuesday, Valmik asked Chauhan to accompany him, and they both died. Masade was also the only bread winner in his family, and is survived by mother, wife and two kids.
Vishal Shukla from Safai Karmachari Andolan and Jai Singh Kachwa of Akhil Bhartiya Safai Majdur said during their protest at mortuary and collector Sachin Kurve’s office that they are demanding monetary help for the family members of the deceased, a government job to one member of each family, and immediate arrest of Deshmukh.
Senior police inspector Vishnu Bhoye said that the fifth labourer Pramod Chauhan is still battling for life at the hospital. Bhoye said his statement will help police take further action in the case.
