‘Smita Patil stood firmly for femininity’
NAGPUR: Smita Patil, an actress of great repute, stood firmly for femininity in the male-dominated society while acting in over 80 Hindi and Marathi films in a career that spanned just over a decade, said vice-chancellor Dr of DY Patil University, PD Patil, during the release of a special issue ‘Smita Smruti-2018’.

“She is also remembered for her roles in mainstream films like ‘Shakti’ and ‘Namak Halaal’. She also acted in Marathi movie ‘Jait Re Jait’, Mrinal Sen’s Bengali film ‘Akaler Sandhaney’ and in Ketan Mehta’s Gujarati movie ‘Bhavni Bhavai’,” said Patil.
On the occasion, Patil also paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary by highlighting his statements, letters, principles, practices and beliefs that have attracted much political and scholarly analysis. “Some writers present him as a paragon of ethical living and pacifism, while others present him as a more complex, contradictory and evolving character influenced by his culture and circumstances,” he said.
Arun Shevte, a famous poet, said he was elated to be a part of an event like this. “Smita Patil had the exceptional ability to stand out, even in a supporting role. This is evident in films like ‘Ardh Satya’, ‘
Talking about the special issue, VS Jog, a well-known columnist, said,. “It is a soulful encomium to Smita Patil, who got married to Raj Babbar and died at a young age of 31, on December 13, 1986, barely two weeks after having given birth to a boy.”
The event was hosted by Rekha Ghiya, who also proposed a vote of thanks.
