NAGPUR: Sighting of
Black Capped Kingfisher
at Tadoba Lake has given bird enthusiasts a reason to smile, as it is not often that this species is spotted. On June 10, Amit Dixit, along with his friends and family, was on his regular
wildlife
safari at Tadoba when they sighted this species.
Dixit, who was accompanied by his friend Amit Maywad, chanced upon this bird in the morning and immediately knew it was special. “I heard the bird call and that got my attention. It was there sitting on a branch and the colours struck me as something different. I knew it was a Kingfisher, but I was not sure which type. I zoomed in with my camera and took multiple photos of it,” said Dixit, whose wife Shweta, daughter Rucha and even mother Vaijayanti are bird enthusiasts.
Once back home, Dixit scoured the internet to find out which species it exactly was. “Then, I found out that it was the Black Capped Kingfisher and other senior bird enthusiasts that I spoke to said others must be made aware of it,” said Dixit.
Black Capped Kingfisher resides mainly in coasts of India and
Bangladesh
. It has a black cap, white collar, deep purplish-blue upper parts, black coverts contrasting with blue secondaries. In flight, it shows bright blue rump & prominent white patches at base of primaries.
Raju Kasambe, an avid bird researcher and assistant director of Education and Conservation Education Centre at
Bombay Natural History Society
, said that the bird is seen usually in this area. “I would not exactly call it rare because people have seen it regularly. The Black Headed Kingfisher is a different species and is found in Sumatra,” he said.
