Shoddy work made civic body repeat patchwork on 25 roads

Nagpur: Shoddy pothole repairs by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has once agains come to the fore. Potholes repaired by the NMC’s hotmix department on 25 stretches have not even lasted five months. Between April 1 and September 1 this year, NMC has repaired potholes at least twice or thrice at these locations.

Data from the NMC’s hotmix department states that it conducted repetitive roadwork on 25 roads. On the Zingabai-Takli stretch, potholes were repaired on three occasions. Potholes again developed at repair stretches like Bhole Petrol Pump Square, Zingabai Takli road etc.Tar roads in Ashi Nagar, Mangalwari, Laxmi Nagar and Nehru Nagar are in bad shape. Of the 2,328 patches, 353 potholes were repaired in Ashi Nagar zone, followed by 323 in Mangalwari zone, 319 in Nehru Nagar zone and 287 in Laxmi Nagar zone. TOI has been reporting about the issue regularly. Janmanch president Rajeev Jagtap termed the shoddy work as a big scam as lakhs of rupees are spent every year on repairs by road-owning agencies like NMC, Nagpur Improvement Trust, state Public Works Department (PWD) and National Highways Authority of India. Material used to repair potholes often becomes loose, resulting in crater-like potholes.“Most of the pothole repair work results in humps, making commuting bumpy. Neither officials nor contractors are held accountable for the poor quality of work,” said Jagtap.PWD’s red book has a standard operating system for pothole repairing. “While undertaking repairs, the spot with potholes should first be made rectangular. After that, tar should be put. But neither the NMC nor private contractors adhere to this basic guideline,” he added.

Pkl MC starts repairing potholed roads

The Municipal Corporation of Panchkula has started the work of recarpeting and patching the city's roads following complaints about their poor condition. The MC commissioner has assured that potholes will be repaired within a week. The work includes filling potholes and recarpeting roads in various areas. This action comes after the roads were affected by rain and numerous complaints were received. The aim is to make all roads free of potholes within a week.

The roundabout on Rampura-Pataudi road near Dwarka Expressway in Gurgaon is causing major traffic congestion due to delays in construction of slip roads and heavy vehicle movement. The poor design of the roundabout and unpaved patches worsen the situation. The revamp of the road, which began 18 months ago, has not been completed yet, leading to gridlocks during peak hours. The authorities, including GMDA and traffic police, have been blamed for not taking necessary actions to resolve the issue.

Potholes, broken footpaths turn RG Baruah road into a risk zone

Commuters in Guwahati are facing difficulties due to potholes and damaged pavements on RG Baruah road. The ongoing construction of a flyover has caused the road to deteriorate, making it a nightmare for bikers and pedestrians. Mud accumulates in the potholes during rainy days, posing risks to motorists and pedestrians. The demolition of pavements has also made it challenging for pedestrians to commute. Additionally, broken cables and scattered construction materials further endanger the movement of people on the road. The authorities have promised to repair the road before Durga Puja.
