Returning officer rejects BJP’s objection to Congress nominee

Yavatmal municipal council

election on Wednesday rejected the BJP nominee Rekha Kothekar’s objection against the Congress nominee

Sandhya Sawalakhe

and validated her nomination.

Sawalakhe informed the media about the development at a press conference held here on Thursday.

According to Sawalakhe, Kothekar had raised an objection under sections 17 and 18 of Peoples Representative Act, 1950 and section 16 of Maharashtra Nagar Parishad, Nagar Panchayat Va Audhogik Nagari Adhiniyam, 1965. The complainant pointed out that Sawalakhe had registered herself in two different constituencies in Ralegaon and Yavatmal, hence her candidature for the election must be invalidated.

Sawalakhe, in her reply, not only denied the allegations but also said that she had filed an application for the cancellation on her name from one of the voters’ lists within the stipulated time frame. Kothekar should have filed an objection on the publication of the draft voters’ list but she did not do so and hence the application should be rejected.

After consulting both the parties, the returning officer concluded that the objection was unsustainable.

Sawalakhe also alleged that the complaint was an outcome of a political agenda of her opponents to divert the attention of the voters.
