In Akola’s Sangola village, Ravana is a local deity, worshipped for prosperity

Akola: While burning effigies of Ravana during Dussehra symbolises the triumph of good over evil, Sangola village in Patur tehsil of Akola district has been worshipping the demon king as their local deity for the past 250 years.
The story behind this tradition is as intriguing as it is unique. Around 250 years ago, a sage resided in the village, and he was deeply respected by the locals. After his death, a plant grew at the site of his samadhi, which developed 10 branches. Seeing this, the villagers decided to install an idol of the sage and commissioned an artist to create a 10-headed figure. However, the artist mistakenly sculpted an idol of Ravana with 10 heads.
When the villagers attempted to bring the idol into the village on a bullock cart, it stopped at the village boundary and wouldn't move forward. Taking this as a divine sign, the villagers decided to install the idol at the boundary itself, where they began worshipping Ravana as their protector, say villagers.
The entire village perceives worship of Ravana as a symbol of prosperity. As per Mangesh Pore, temple trustee of Sangola, the village has been free from disasters ever since the installation of the 10-headed Ravana statue. "Sangola has prospered, and we now regard Ravana as our village deity," says Pore.
