Prabhag 1 Faces BJP’s Test to Retain Dominance Ahead of Civic Polls
Nagpur: With municipal elections being held after a gap of nearly nine years, Prabhag 1 has emerged as a prestige battle for all major political parties. In the 2017 Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enjoyed complete dominance in this Prabhag, winning all four seats. However, with a long gap since the last polls, local equations have changed significantly, making the voters' verdict unpredictable this time. Prabhag 1 falls under the North Nagpur Assembly constituency, where the BJP traditionally struggled to deliver strong performances in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. While the Prabhag has a sizeable population of Scheduled Castes and Sindhi residents, it also has a significant presence of OBCs, Muslims, Scheduled Tribes, and Christians. In recent years, the number of Hindi-speaking residents has increased in the border areas of the Prabhag, adding a new layer to the electoral arithmetic and potentially playing a decisive role in the civic polls.
In the 2017 civic elections, when all four corporators from this Prabhag were elected on BJP tickets, the sitting MLA from North Nagpur was BJP's Dr Milind Mane. However, in 2019, Congress leader Dr Nitin Raut reclaimed the Assembly seat. Despite this shift at the Assembly level, BJP's influence in the Prabhag continues to be strongly associated with former corporator and ex-standing committee chairman Virendra Kukreja, who is believed to have the organisational strength to get candidates elected on his own clout. On the other hand, the Congress has stepped up its preparations, with former corporator and state secretary Suresh Jagyasi taking the lead in mobilising support. While the contest is expected to be largely bipolar — between the BJP and Congress — candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are also likely to enter the fray and influence the final outcome. Though ticket distribution triggered intense jockeying within all major parties, there is also growing pressure to ensure representation for Hindi-speaking communities this time. Development remains a key poll issue. Large tracts along the Prabhag's periphery are marked by unauthorised layouts that have remained outside the development net. Even in approved layouts, residents complain of poor internal roads and inadequate drainage lines. Locals also allege that most civic works since 2017 have been concentrated in Jaripatka, leaving other pockets neglected. From the BJP, names doing the rounds include former corporators Virendra Kukreja, Sushma Chaudhary, Mahendraprasad Dhanvijay, and Pramila Mathrani, along with aspirants Avinash Dhamgaye, Vishal Sakhare, Sudhir Jambhulkar, Jitendra Thakur, Sunita Mahalle, Madhuri Sonatakke, and Ramesh Wankhede. On the Congress side, Suresh Jagyasi, Rohit Yadav, Mahendra Borker, and Baby Gaurikar are in contention. From the BSP, there is keen contest among Kavita Landge, Rajendra Darwade, Jayesh Gedam, Rajesh Nandeshwar, and Vivek Sangole to be fielded. As campaigning gathers pace, Prabhag 1 is shaping up as a crucial micro-battle where local issues, shifting demographics, and strong personalities could determine whether the BJP manages to hold on to its earlier supremacy or faces a setback in the civic polls. *Key Local Issues*Large number of unauthorised layouts in border areas, deprived of basic developmentLack of roads and drainage lines in newly developed layoutsPersistent waterlogging in several settlements during monsoonExcessively wide road in Nara village drawing civic attentionResidents affected by ash pollution from Koradi Thermal Power Station*Voter Profile*Total voters: 74,112Men: 36,799Women: 37,269*Seat Categories* A: Scheduled CasteB: WomenC: WomenD: General
