One App, One Route: Journey to integrate Metro & city buses

Nagpur: Imagine stepping out of your home, opening a single app, and knowing exactly which bus to catch, which Metro to board, how long the walk will be, and what time you will reach your destination — without switching between platforms or guessing connections. All these is promised by the "Journey App", a new integrated mobility app being developed jointly by MahaMetro and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).Senior Metro officials confirmed that nearly 80% of the app development work is complete, and the platform is expected to be launched soon. "The objective is to fix the long-standing last-mile connectivity problem and make public transport in Nagpur function as one coordinated network rather than isolated systems," said a senior MahaMetro official.
The app will offer commuters a door-to-door travel plan. A person travelling from Mankapur to Mihan, for example, can check the nearest bus stop or Metro station from their residence, view the walking distance to reach it, and see the exact timings of buses and trains. The app will then map out the most efficient route — whether it involves walking 200m to a bus stop, boarding a city bus to a Metro station, taking the Metro for the main stretch, and then switching to another bus after alighting at Khapri.Officials added that the application will evolve beyond its initial version. "At present, the app will function primarily as a guiding platform, helping commuters plan their routes. However, we are exploring the integration of feeder services such as auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws so that users can access a completely seamless end-to-end commute," a senior official said. The aim is to gradually widen the app's scope to ensure that every leg of a journey — including first- and last-mile segments — is digitally connected within a single interface.Further upgrades are also expected to focus on unified ticketing. Currently, MahaMetro's Nagpur Metro app provides bus ticketing services as well, while the NMC-linked Chalo (Aapli Bus) app supports metro ticketing alongside facilitating bus ticket bookings. In the future, these services may be additionally consolidated under the Journey platform, enabling commuters not only to receive route guidance similar to map-based navigation tools but also to book buses, metro services, and potentially auto-rickshaws through one integrated public transport system. Officials clarified that these features will not be part of the initial rollout but are under active consideration for subsequent updates.While the Metro network offers fast transit along its corridors, accessibility to and from stations often limits ridership growth, as the official record shows. By digitally stitching together bus services and Metro routes, the new platform aims to create a seamless commuter experience. Officials believe the app could encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transport by offering clarity, predictability, and convenience. If implemented effectively, "Journey" may not just connect routes — it could redefine how Nagpur navigates its daily commute.
