No plaint, Mayo checks CCTV to sack 3 CMOs

Nagpur: Acting with great speed, the administrators of the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (

Mayo

), on Tuesday, sacked three casual medical officers (CMO) only on the basis of CCTV footage. The visual showed them arguing with BJP corporator

Dayashankar Tiwari

who had brought his son for treatment on August 12 midnight.

Neither Tiwari nor his son made any written complaint about any shoddy treatment. Show cause notices have been served to permanent nursing staff and resident doctors who were on duty when the incident happened.

“We took cognisance of the telephonic complaint given by the patient’s father. The CCTV footage was also examined. It was seen that the doctors had neglected the unconscious patient and got involved in an argument with his father. The first duty of the doctor is to treat a patient,” said Sagar Pandey, Mayo’s assistant medical superintendent.

Tiwari had brought his son to IGGMC after his blood sugar level had gone down. “We got timely treatment from the staff. There was a delay in removing the intravenous catheter. Instead of removing it when my son was on the bed, the nurse asked him to come to her. When she was removing the catheter, some blood oozed seeing which my son fell unconscious,” he told TOI.

An irked Tiwari sought an explanation. Three doctors, who were on casual duty at the hospital, came to the support of the nursing staff and even called out to the security guards.

The doctors apparently ignored the unconscious patient. Tiwari then called a senior official of Mayo hospital and narrated the incident.

“All who have neglected their duties during emergency hours have been served notices. These three doctors were on 120-day contracts and so, as per rules, their services were terminated,” said Pandey.

Dean Dr Ajay Keoliya admitted that there was no written complaint. “Negligence in emergency health services is a sensitive issue. Senior officials of the hospital inspected the CCTV footage. As the doctors were found to have indulged in an argument, they have been asked to stop services with immediate effect,” he said.

On the action taken by the hospital, Tiwari said, “It is their internal matter. I’m not interested in filing a written complaint.”

The 120-day contract of these doctors has a clause that the dean can terminate it any day in between without reason.
