NMC to adopt 100-day plan to boost property tax collection
Nagpur: With a view to streamline property tax collection and make the process more citizen-friendly, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has been directed to prepare and implement a 100-day action plan focusing on system reforms, accurate taxpayer data, and improved recovery.Standing Committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare issued the directive at a meeting of the Tax Assessment and Collection Special Committee on Monday. The meeting was chaired by committee chief Sarita Kawre and attended by senior officials and elected representatives. Dani-Wakhare stressed the need for correct addresses and mobile numbers in property tax records to ensure that citizens receive accurate information and face fewer hurdles while paying dues.Kawre called for a comprehensive survey of all hotels, hospitals, and commercial properties within 30 days. She warned that strict action would be taken against officials if tax evasion is detected.She also ordered an audit of properties registered as residential but used commercially. Details of the top 25 defaulters are to be presented in the next meeting.Each zone was asked to submit reasons for poor recovery and outline future strategies.
An Action Taken Report (ATR) must be presented in the next meeting, while a preliminary report on progress is to be submitted within 15 days.Kawre instructed that 112 tax dept staff deployed in other departments be immediately repatriated to strengthen recovery efforts. Deputy municipal commissioner (tax) Milind Meshram informed the committee that agencies will be appointed at the zonal level to distribute demand notices, with real-time updates — including date-stamped photographs — to be uploaded into the system.
