NMC boosts firepower, sanitation fleet with 34 new vehicles

Nagpur: In a major push to strengthen emergency response and civic services, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Monday inducted six mini fire tenders, 25 door-to-door garbage collection vehicles, and three poclain machines into its fleet.The new vehicles were flagged off at the civic headquarters by mayor Neeta Thakre in the presence of deputy mayor Leela Hattibed, ruling party leader Narendra Borkar, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, and other senior officials.
Spread across nearly 227 sq km, Nagpur has expanded rapidly, with several old localities still marked by narrow lanes. In fire emergencies, large tenders often struggle to access congested areas, delaying response and increasing the risk of casualties and property loss. To plug this critical gap, the NMC purchased six mini fire tenders of 2,000-litre capacity at a cost of Rs6.07 crore under the 2024-25 budget.Fabricated by Devi Fire Services, Solapur, the vehicles were delivered on January 8, 2026. With four existing mini tenders already in service, the fleet now has 10 such compact units capable of navigating densely populated and narrow stretches. The fire department also operates seven 16,000-litre tenders, 14 of 5,000-litre capacity, a 70-metre hydraulic platform, a 32-metre hydraulic platform, and a 42-metre TTL for high-rise emergencies.In solid waste management, 25 new garbage collection vehicles will replace ageing units. Five vehicles will serve zones 6 to 10, while 20 will be deployed in zones 1 to 5. The procurement was funded through Rs 4.47 crore recovered as penalties from waste collection agencies BVG India Ltd and Enviro Infra Projects Ltd.Ahead of the monsoon, the NMC also added a 25-tonne long-boom machine for river cleaning and two poclain machines — 5-tonne and 3.5-tonne — for desilting narrow drains, aiming to prevent waterlogging and urban flooding.
