"I came to know about the case through newspapers. Officials of health department confirmed that police arrested Meshram in the case. He was not a permanent employee. I directed immediate suspension of Meshram's card," he said.
NMC sources told TOI that assistant commissioner of NMC Satranjipura zone, Ashok Patil, has been directed to verify as to how the survivor was working at the zone office. "Verification revealed that the woman was not a permanent and even daily wage sanitary worker," sources said.
Corporator Alka Dalal, who helped the survivor lodge a complaint, told TOI that she (the survivor) had been engaged to sweep the zone office premises. "Meshram assured her help in getting the daily wage sanitary worker's job. Meshram assured to arrange for some certificates required for the job, but he raped her," Dalal said.
Lakadganj API SE Wankhede said, "A medical examination of both, survivor and accused was conducted on Wednesday. Since the alleged incident took place over a month ago, there is little chance of substantial medical evidence being found. The survivor told police that after she was allegedly raped, she complained to the seniors at the zone office but was ignored. Eight days later, she was ousted from her job, but no action was taken against Meshram. However, when word got out that the accused had raped the woman, the other aiwajdars had thrashed him."
