Music Maestro Taufiq Qureshi Mesmerises Nagpur With Fusion Magic
Nagpur: The city was treated to an unforgettable evening of rhythm, melody, and innovation as legendary percussionist Taufiq Qureshi performed for the first time in Nagpur, enthralling audiences with his mastery over the djembe percussion, an African drum reimagined for Hindustani classical music. His performance, blending the beats of world percussion with the soul of Indian ragas, marked one of the most electrifying moments of this year's Khasdar Sanskrutik Mahotsav at the Ishwar Deshmukh College of Physical Education grounds at Hanuman Nagar.Qureshi, brother of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, brought his unique fusion sensibilities to Nagpur, joining an illustrious ensemble that included Padma Shri flautist Ronu Majumdar, tabla virtuoso Bikram Ghosh, sitarist Swikar Katti, violinist Mysore Manjunath Mahadevappa, bassist Manish Kulkarni, jazz pianist Atul Raninga, and drum artists Gautam Sharma and Nilesh More. Together, they delivered a musical spectacle that transcended genres and traditions. The evening opened with ‘Dancing with the Beat' in Raag Hansdhwani, composed by Ronu Majumdar, instantly immersing the audience in a vibrant celebration of sound. The seamless fusion of flute, sitar, violin, and percussion created an atmosphere charged with artistic energy. The crowd responded with rapturous applause as the melodies built into crescendos of creative improvisation. The highlight of the night came with a mesmerising rendition in Raag Kalavati, a composition taught by Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar. The performance carried the audience to a spiritual high point of musical bliss. This was followed by an enchanting presentation of Raag Bageshri in Jhaptal, showcasing the delicate interplay of melody and rhythm. The finale, Ramta, a dynamic fusion piece by Bikram Ghosh and Taufiq Qureshi, left the audience spellbound.Addressing the gathering, Ronu Majumdar expressed gratitude to Union minister Nitin Gadkari for his consistent support of the arts. "Nagpur and Sanskar Bharati have shown immense love for music and culture. Festivals like this help our traditions thrive," he said. He also performed a rendition of Mera Sona Re on the special request of Gadkari. The event was inaugurated by Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Kanchana Gadkari, state information commissioner Rahul Pandey, Dr Muzaffar Lakdawala, Dr Harshvardhan and Dr Manjusha Mardikar, MLA Vipin Verma, and collector Vipin Itankar, who lit the ceremonial lamp. The performances drew a standing ovation from the audience, many describing it as a rare confluence of rhythm and divinity. Before the main event, the city's very own James Band set the stage ablaze with their electrifying music and soulful vocals. The band, led by James Ingole on vocals, featured Mohit Chaudhary on guitar, Ayush Bangaria on keyboard, Kunal Shende on drums, and Joseph Newton on bass. Their dynamic performance captivated the audience, earning resounding applause. All members of the band were felicitated by the dignitaries for their contribution to the city's musical culture.
