NASHIK: With a superlative show, hoopsters from Mumbai claimed a hat-trick of titles dominating the concluding day of the state-level basketball championship here on Tuesday. Mumbai won both the U-19 boys and girls title before stunning holders Pune to stake claim for the U-14 girlsa title.
The home crowd too had something to cheer as their U-14 boys team outclassed Mumbai for their only title.
A day after Nagpur cagers failed to break their semifinal jinx, both the U-19 girls and U-14 boyas teams registered convincing victories in the third place play-offs for a bronze medal finish.
The girlsa U-19 summit clash hogged all the limelight on the final day. Ankita Negi fired 32 points to steal the show and guide Mumbai to a 69-62 win over defending champions Pune in extra time after both the teams netted 56 points apiece at regulation.
After being down in the initial halfa"losing the first two quarters 8-11 and 10-13 respectivelya"Mumbai girls brought parity by winning the third period 16-10. The high scoring last quarter saw both the teams scoring 22 points apiece as the match was stretched for a five minutes of extra time.
In the extra period, Ankita netted some crucial baskets and with good defence in toe allowed the experienced Pune girls to score a mere 6 points as against the 13 netted by Mumbai to take home the U-19 state crown.
In the boysa summit clash, Mumbai proved too tall for the home team as the lanky cagers prevailed over Nashik 72-51. Harshal Parab scored a game-high 28 points while Sidhesh Pagare (15) and
Manish Pandey (14) supported well. For Nashik, Rohan Jagtap (20) and Shreyas Salunke (13) played well.
In the U-14 section, Nashik boysa 35-19 victory over Mumbai halted the metro city cagers from making a clean sweep of state titles.
In the girlsa section, Mumbai registered a come from behind 5-point (32-27) title triumph over Pune. With this close defeat, Pune missed their eighth title on trot.
With two bronze medals, the day also brought some cheering news for Nagpur. The U-14 cagers of Modern School outplayed Amravati 38-21 in the third place play-offs. Abhiram Tapas and Shrijeet Shivdekar contributed 20 and 14 points respectively for the winners. Similarly, the U-19 girls from Ambedkar College representing Nagpur division defeated Nashik 40-31 to finish third in the state tourney
