MSEDCL steps up action against power theft outside buffer zone

Nagpur: Post the tiger cell meeting held last month at Pench, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has stepped up action against power thefts outside the buffer zones of forests. At least four offences have been registered so far in this regard, officials said.Farmers often put a hook on the overhead high-tension power cables and use it to power electric fencing. This is done to avoid crop damage by wild animals. During last month’s meeting, district tiger cell president SP (rural) Harssh A Poddar had pulled up concerned agencies for failing to prevent wildlife deaths due to electrocution.

Referring to the death of an adult tiger due to electrocution earlier this year, Poddar had asked the MSEDCL officials regarding the actions taken against the power thefts, especially outside the buffer of Pench, Umred-Karhandla and Bor tiger reserve.Poddar told TOI that all agencies have been briefed about the actions expected from them. They have also been assured of necessary police support. “The wildlife protection needs a multi-agency approach. Electric fencing around agricultural fields poses a serious hazard for humans too, especially children,” said Poddar.According to a forest official, MSEDCL personnel must be present at the site of the electrocution to make a watertight case. “In the past persons accused of electrocuting wild animals got the benefit of doubt in the court as the MSEDCL personnel were not present during the panchanama but their opinions were later included in the probe. A joint inspection or patrolling of the forest department and MSEDCL is the need of the hour,” said a senior forest official.A MSEDCL official said that electricity department personnel often undertake joint patrolling with forest and police departments whenever there are specific inputs or requirements.“As soon as any accidents take place, the supply is tripped from the nearby substation. This alerts our patrolling to detect the fault and eventually we reach the spot where the electrocution takes place,” he said.

Grievance redressal forum comes to rescue of consumer, asks MSEDCL to rectify power bill

The consumer grievance redressal forum of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has nullified power bills for four months of a consumer from Cidco N-3 area. The forum has asked MSEDCL to issue revised bills based on monthly power consumption. The consumer had received a bill of Rs 9,850 for April and alleged that MSEDCL failed to take proper meter reading, resulting in excessive charges. The forum ruled in favor of the consumer and asked MSEDCL to issue revised billing. The consumer's claim for compensation was rejected by the forum.

DK forest department personnel win CMs medal

Three officers from the state forest department in Dakshina Kannada district were honored with medals at a ceremony organized by the Karnataka forest department. ACF P Sridhar was recognized for his contributions to forest protection and development, while deputy RFO Santosh Shivappa Dhammasoor was honored for his conservation efforts. Two electrocuted during immersion

Two people died in Khambhat, Anand district, during a Ganpati immersion procession when the idol touched a high-tension power line. Two others were injured and taken to the hospital. The incident is being investigated, with allegations that the power supply should have been disconnected. In another incident, two individuals drowned during idol immersion in Bapatla, Vijayawada. Meanwhile, liquor sales have been banned for two days in Telangana during the Ganesh idol immersion, and thousands of idols were immersed in Mumbai, with some in artificial lakes.
