Midpoint RVR Installed At Nagpur Airport To Strengthen Flight Safety

Nagpur: City's Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport has achieved another important milestone in aviation safety with the installation of the mid-point Runway Visual Range (RVR) system on May 9.With this installation, Nagpur airport now has RVR coverage at both runway ends as well as the mid-runway point, making it eligible for consideration under Category II (CAT-II) airport operations, subject to approval and operational certification by the competent aviation authorities.The midpoint RVR is a significant technological upgrade for low-visibility flight operations. The system provides real-time runway visibility data to Air Traffic Control and pilots, enabling accurate decision-making during aircraft landing and take-off, especially during fog, haze, rain, and other adverse weather conditions.Rizwan Ahmed, director, Aerodrome Meteorological Office (AMO), Nagpur, said that the installation of the midpoint RVR will further strengthen aviation meteorological services at Nagpur airport. He stated that precise and real-time visibility information is essential for safe aircraft operations, particularly during reduced visibility conditions."The midpoint RVR will enhance the accuracy of runway visibility assessment and provide better operational support to pilots, ATC and airport authorities. This development will further improve flight safety, reduce weather-related disruptions, and strengthen aviation services at Nagpur airport," Ahmed said.Earlier, two advanced RVR systems were installed at both ends of the runway at Nagpur airport. With the installation of the midpoint RVR, the airport has taken a major step towards enhanced low-visibility operations and improved compliance with advanced aviation safety requirements.AMO Nagpur, functioning under the India Meteorological Department, plays a key role in providing aviation meteorological support for safe and efficient flight operations. The latest RVR upgrade is expected to further boost Nagpur airport's operational capability and support its growing importance as a major aviation hub of Central India.
