He was speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of MGIMS, Sevagram. Dhirubhai Mehta, president of
Kasturba Health Society
, PL Tapadia, trustee, Dr BS Garg, secretary, Dr NM Gangane, dean, MGIMS, Dr SP Kalantri, medical superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Dr Satish Kumar, officer in-charge, Students’ Council and Unmesh Rathod, outgoing general secretary, were present.
Dr Lahane, who has performed over 1.7 lakh cataract surgeries and treated nearly 50 lakh patients, was all praise for MGIMS. He said value-based teaching, in-depth knowledge and establishing good communication with patients are of utmost importance in the effective functioning of an institution.
Dr Lahane also released the 44th issue of ‘Sushruta’, a students magazine.
In his address, Dr Gangane said, “MGIMS has been at the forefront of providing quality medical education in the country for the past five decades. It boasts of dedicated and skilled faculty supported by excellent infrastructure, library, museums, diagnostic and skill laboratories that provide hands-on training to students.”
Mehta said, “MGIMS makes every effort to acquaint medical students with real rural India. Quoting from a recently published book, he said of the 470 medical schools in the country, MGIMS is one of the three medical institutions in India identified for honesty, austerity and selfless service.”
A day earlier, more than 300 alumni from all over the world had organized a reunion to celebrate the golden jubilee. The alumni association felicitated teachers for their contribution in shaping career of students.
Dr A Mehendale, president of MGIMS Alumni Association, Dr Rajeev Tandon and Dr Satish Kumar spoke.
Dr Vinod Shende proposed a vote of thanks.
