NAGPUR: A man, in his 40s, and his parents were booked after his mentally challenged wife committed suicide at their Vyankatesh Nagar residence in Nandanwan area. Srujana Lacharwar (37) had set herself ablaze on July 31. Her parents claimed she was tortured and harassed by her husband Padmakar and in-laws for not having a child. However, they claimed that Padmakar was infertile and still he would blame Srujana for their childlessness.
According to the police, the couple had an arranged marriage in 1994. In 2000, the couple adopted a child, Siddhant, who turned 11 this year. After a few years, Srujana lost her mental balance. Padmakar sent her at her sister's house in Warangal for treatment. She returned after some months. Police said on July 30, she came outside her flat screaming and shouting at Padmakar. Later, Padmakar took her inside. Around midnight, Padamakar noticed she had set herself afire and rushed to save her.
She was rushed to hospital but declared dead on arrival while Padmakar, who also suffered burns, is undergoing treatment. Srujana's parents lodged a complaint against Padmakar and alleged that he and his parents would torture for being unable to conceive. They claimed the torture was responsible for her mental condition too and it forced her to commit suicide.
