Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former governor of West Bengal and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has been appointed the new chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University at Wardha, university sources said on Tuesday.
As a former member of the India Administrative Services, Gandhi has served as secretary to the President of India and as high commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka, among other administrative and diplomatic posts.
He will be the third chancellor of the university, succeeding Prof Namwar Singh, whose three-year term ended a few months ago.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi, son of Devdash Gandhi and Lakshmi Gandhi, whose maternal grandfather was C Rajgopalachari (Rajaji), will be the first chancellor with an administrative background. He also has a Hindi literary background.
He has translated the novel 'A Suitable Boy' by Vikram Seth into Hindi, apart from his own writings like 'Gandhi and Sri Lanka', 'Nehru and Sri Lanka', 'India House, Colombo - Portrait of a Residence', 'Gandhi Is Gone. Who Will Guide Us Now?'
Gandhi could not be contacted on Tuesday at his Chennai residence, since he is out of station till November 12. The director press, ministry of human resource development, Mamta Verma, sought time to confirm the appointment of Gandhi.
A letter regarding him appointment has been sent to the university authorities, sources said.
