Around 2,000 police personnel and another 300 central paramilitary forces were deployed in Katol, where Deshmukh supporters are protesting the incident. Deshmukh, returning after addressing a rally for his son Salil, fighting on an NCP Sharad Pawar ticket, came under attack from stone-pelters on Nagpur-Jalalkheda road on Monday.

SP Nagpur Rural Harssh A Poddar stated the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory team (RFSL) was summoned to the spot of the incident. "The investigations are underway, and no one should take the law into their hands. We will take strict actions if someone is found breaking a law," said Poddar, adding CCTV cameras are being scrutinised.

Deshmukh was returning after the last lap of the campaign at Narkhed for his son Salil, who’s fighting on an NCP (SP) ticket against BJP’s Charansingh Thakur, when he came under attack. An eyewitness said attackers were raising political slogans while hurling stones.

A boulder was later recovered on the bonnet and another stone from under the seat alongside the driver, where the ex-home minister was seated. Sources said Deshmukh’s security was following him in a vehicle and the ex-home minister came under attack before his commandos could react.
