AKOLA: Middle aged 'Kirtankar' Gajanan Sahebrao Khette was held guilty by session court and sentenced to eight years rigorous imprisonment for grievously injuring his wife Vaishali. Principal district and session Judge A R Mahajan also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the accused. On failing to deposit the fine amount, the accused would be required to serve an additional year's term, the court added.

The court also directed to release Rs 20,000 out of the fine amount to Khette's wife Vaishali.
The prosecution told the court that Khette, who disliked his wife, stabbed her as she was not beautiful. Vaishali was rushed to the police with six stab injuries on her person on June 24, 2008. The incident occurred at village Mana in Akola district. On the basis of a complaint lodged, an offence was registered under section 307 amounting to attempt to murder against Khette, who used to travel in rural areas delivering religious discourses.
The court examined nine witnesses before delivering the verdict in the case.
