NAGPUR: “The semester pattern introduced for undergraduate and postgraduate courses should be done away with as it becomes difficult to check, verify and revaluate lakhs of answersheets in a short period of time due to lack of sufficient number of lecturers,” said Baban Taywade, principal of Dhanwate National College (DNC), on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, Taywade said that the new university law should be implemented effectively and colleges granted financial autonomy to get rid of problems many educational institutions face today. The practice of appointing lecturers on temporary basis is affecting the quality of teaching which ultimately hits students hard, he added.

Taywade said that a two-day state level conference of Non-Government College Principals Forum on ‘Quality in higher

education

in Maharashtra, new practices, sustenance and enhancement’ will be held at DNC on July 9 and 10. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate the meet. The conference will discuss ways to improve quality of higher education in Maharashtra. Though the country has developed in many sectors, unemployment problem continues to persist for which remedial measures should be initiated.

The conference has been divided into three sessions. Two sessions will be held on the first day while one on the last day. Contemporary issues in Indian higher education system, new university act, challenges before higher education and globalization of higher education will be discussed during the meet.

Vinod Tawde, minister for school, higher and technical education, Arun Kumar Shelke, president, Shivaji Education Society, Amravati, SV Kane, vice-chancellor of Nagpur University and Pramod Yeole, pro vice-chancellor, will be present besides a host of dignitaries.

Earlier, guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule will inaugurate an auditorium and 40.96 KVP solar power project at DNC at 11am on Friday. Mayor Nanda Jichkar, Saoner MLA Sunil Kedar and former member of Nagpur Improvement Trust Anant Gharad will be the chief guests at the inaugural function.
