Higher healthcare outlay to bolster AIIMS Nagpur

Nagpur: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Nagpur is poised for major expansion following increased health sector allocation in Union Budget 2025-26. With an estimated 8.5% growth in healthcare spending, expectations are high that the tertiary care facility will receive enhanced funding to upgrade infrastructure, add super-speciality services, and strengthen medical education, significantly benefiting patients from eastern Maharashtra and neighbouring regions of central India.Nagpur AIIMS already emerged as a key referral hospital for patients from Vidarbha and surrounding states, but the 150-acre campus is now facing capacity and infrastructure constraints. Earlier reports indicate that while core buildings such as OPD and IPD blocks, hostels, and academic facilities are completed, the institute identified the need for at least 50 additional acre land to expand facilities and services.
Officials said this additional land is crucial to accommodate future growth, including expanded super-speciality blocks, residential space for an increasing number of students and staff, and advanced treatment units. The third phase of development is expected to include a large tertiary care building with extended facilities, but progress is affected due to the current land shortage.The increased allocation could help address several challenges by supporting land acquisition, infra expansion, and clinical services upgrade. Health officials also expect that additional funding will help speed up recruitment of trained specialists, a long-pending requirement as patient inflow continues to rise from central India.
