NAGPUR: The Happy Streets stretch from Law College Square to Laxmi Bhuvan Square will be abuzz with cheer for the second Sunday in a row. This initiative by The Times of India and Maharashtra Times helps citizens reclaim the streets to engage in activities like zumba, singing, dancing, games etc with the roads closed to traffic.
This Sunday, there will be an added attraction, as the Nagpur city police Cyclothon will also pass through Happy Streets. To enable this, all activities of Happy Streets will be located on the left hand side of the stretch while moving from Law College towards Laxmi Bhuvan, leaving space for the Cyclothon to go through.
Happy Streets participants can clap and cheer as the cyclists pass by on the other side. The cyclothon will be flagged off at 7 am from police headquarters at Zingabai Takli.
City police chief Amitesh Kumar said, “Happy Streets is a popular event, and we want the police Cyclothon too to be a youth-friendly event. We are focussing on the three themes of traffic discipline, women’s safety, and security and communal harmony. It would be heartening to see the substantial youths at these two events mingle this Sunday.”
Kumar has added that police would also hold an exhibition on Saturday to showcase the redeveloped Police Bhavan. Police paraphernalia, equipment and weaponry would also be on display.
Actor and choreographer Anmol Khatri is looking forward to attending Happy Streets for the second time. He said, “It was a ton of fun. I had a great time making people dance on catchy numbers and help them release stress in a way. There should be an open mic next time, where people come up to sing whatever they wish. Educational activities like climate change awareness are welcome.” He added, “Happy Streets is like natural medicine, which relaxes the mind. It is the need of the hour, especially since people have been restricted indoors due to Covid.”
Another regular attendee, Payal Baghrecha, One Pie Events CEO, said, “Happy Streets is a wonderful concept. Such community-centric activities uplift everyone’s spirits and bring people together.” She said local artists should be promoted.
Fashion model Anmol Singh Wade wants this to be a regular feature. “The event is a joyful one for each and every visitor. Everyone leaves with the enthusiasm of being back again after a week. It is an activity which should be held every Sunday throughout the year.”
Sportbuds founder Devyani Joshi said, “Happy Streets is all about the carnival mood on Sunday morning. It keeps us active and waiting for the next Sunday. The event has a plethora of activities for people of all ages. It also encourages fitness and wellness programmes, which is required. I do believe such events should be held round the year. It is the pride of our city.”

It was such an amazing experience to be there at Happy Street. Since Covid, I’ve not seen people so joyous & cheerful. Since people will be there in huge numbers, wearing masks should be a must.

It was a fun experience, being able to go out with friends and family, and take part in activities is such a pleasant memory. Since there are people in such huge numbers, there should be arrangements to handle the crowd properly, so everyone gets a chance to enjoy themselves.

Happy Streets is a one-of-a-kind experience, which is why a lot of people from different parts of the city come to this event. On the first day, we struggled to find parking. A bit more attention needs to be paid to the same to make the event a greater success.

It was a decent event on a beautiful morning and a lot of active people. Crowd management could be better. I expect more fun activities in the upcoming event.
